BiMUN 2nd Session

BiMUN 1st Session

Bangladesh International Model United Nations (BiMUN)-2023

The Bangladesh International Model United Nations- 2023 is being organized by the United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB). The conference’s goal is to bring together young minds to address urgent global issues, enhance diplomatic skills, and promote international collaboration.

Theme:

The central theme of BiMUN 2023 is “Unity for a Sustainable Future: Addressing Climate Vulnerability.” With climate change presenting an increasingly urgent global challenge, delegates will be tasked with addressing its impact on vulnerable communities and devising sustainable solutions for a better future.

The theme “Unity for a Sustainable Future: Addressing Climate Vulnerability” is of utmost importance and needs to be drawn attention for several reasons:

  1. Urgency of Climate Change: Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. Its adverse effects are already being felt worldwide, from rising sea levels and extreme weather events to disruptions in ecosystems and agriculture. Addressing climate change requires immediate and coordinated action to mitigate its impacts.
  2. Global Significance: Climate change is a global issue that knows no borders. Its effects transcend national boundaries and affect every country and community. By promoting unity and collaboration, the international community can work together to find effective and sustainable solutions.
  3. Vulnerability of Communities: Climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable communities, including those in developing countries, low-lying coastal areas, and indigenous populations. These communities often lack the resources and capacity to adapt to the changing climate, making them more susceptible to its adverse effects.
  4. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Addressing climate change is directly linked to several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, such as combating poverty, ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, promoting sustainable cities, and protecting life on land and below water. Achieving these goals requires concerted efforts to tackle climate vulnerability.
  5. Interconnectedness of Global Challenges: Climate change exacerbates other global challenges, such as food security, public health, and migration. By addressing climate vulnerability, we can create a ripple effect of positive change and foster resilience in the face of other crises.
  6. Youth Empowerment and Engagement: The theme is particularly relevant to the youth, as they will inherit the consequences of climate change and play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future. BiMUN 2023 provides a platform for young minds to raise their voices, propose innovative solutions, and contribute to global climate action.
  7. International Cooperation: Climate change requires a unified approach that transcends political, social, and economic differences. By emphasizing unity, BiMUN 2023 seeks to encourage cooperation among nations, organizations, and individuals to address the climate crisis collectively.

BiMUN 2023 hopes to raise awareness of the subject “Unity for a Sustainable Future: Addressing Climate Vulnerability,” promote conversation, and motivate practical actions that will help to build a more sustainable and resilient future for all. In recognition of the fact that the issues brought on by climate change can only be adequately tackled through joint effort and resolution, the conference acts as a catalyst for worldwide collaboration and youth empowerment.

Empowering Youth Leadership: UNYSAB's Journey with Model United Nations

The United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) is a non-profit youth organization dedicated to fostering “Leadership Through Volunteerism” in Bangladesh. With a strong membership of 5,000 young individuals, UNYSAB serves as a voice for youth perspectives on global issues. Through various events and initiatives, the organization aims to raise social awareness and cultivate essential leadership skills among its members. One of its key contributions is the organization of Model United Nations (MUN) conferences in Bangladesh, with over 11 successful conferences held to date. Additionally, UNYSAB has achieved recognition at international MUNs hosted in different countries. By collaborating with prestigious institutions, UNYSAB harnesses collective efforts for significant impact, creating a platform for cross-cultural dialogue and empowering the next generation of leaders to address contemporary challenges and contribute positively to society.

UNYSAB was established in 1999 with a mission to represent the voice of youth concerning global issues, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Human Rights Development. The organization’s principal activities include organizing and promoting MUN conferences and workshops at various educational levels, such as universities, colleges, and schools. These conferences provide an opportunity for participants to engage in diplomatic simulations, enhance their diplomatic abilities, and address burning global problems. UNYSAB also actively participates in MUNs worldwide and commemorates significant UN days. Additionally, the organization organizes seminars, workshops, and cultural and youth exchange programs, further enriching the experiences of its members.

For the past 24 years, UNYSAB has been steadfast in promoting the essence of diplomacy in Bangladesh through the concept of Model United Nations. Its achievements include hosting productive MUN conferences and workshops, such as Bangladesh Model United Nations (BANMUN), UNYSAB Model United Nations (UNYSUB MUN), Bangladesh International Model United Nations (BiMUN), BrainWiz Model United Nations, National Youth Summit, Model Youth Parliament, and Shadow Youth Parliament (SYP). These initiatives have contributed to the remarkable success of UNYSAB and have garnered support from the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC-Dhaka) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in promoting Model United Nations across the country.

Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), focusing on multilateral diplomacy, international relations, and effective communication. Participants, acting as foreign ambassadors, engage in a fictitious UN meeting, addressing global challenges and proposing solutions. Before the conference, delegates conduct thorough geopolitical studies on assigned nations, stepping into the shoes of diplomats and analyzing current international concerns. The MUN experience equips over 200,000 college and high school students worldwide with essential skills, such as diplomatic expertise, leadership, public speaking, and adherence to UN principles. Participants collaborate in committees representing various countries, enriching their understanding of global issues and fostering empathy and engagement as responsible global citizens.

In conclusion, Model United Nations serves as a valuable educational tool, empowering students to become knowledgeable, compassionate, and actively engaged global citizens. Through their involvement in MUN conferences, young individuals are equipped to tackle complex problems and make a positive impact on the world. UNYSAB plays a pivotal role in nurturing these capabilities among Bangladeshi youth, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to the global community.

Committees of BiMUN 2023

Delegates at BiMUN 2023 will have the opportunity to participate in various committees, each addressing different aspects of the conference theme. The committees and their respective agendas are as follows:

UNDP is a United Nations agency concerned with assisting countries in eliminating poverty and achieving long-term economic growth and human development. Though the UNDP’s ultimate goal is to eradicate poverty, it also strives to promote democratic governance, the rule of law, and inclusive institutions. UNDP collaborates with governments and other parties to react appropriately to climate change issues. It also assists countries in improving their national climate policies and strategies to meet the Paris Agreement’s goals.

The United Nations Environment Programme is in charge of organizing environmental responses across the United Nations system. UNEP works to achieve transformational change for people and nature by addressing the root causes of the three cosmic crises of climate change, habitat destruction, and waste and air pollution. Climate Action, Chemicals and Pollution Action, Nature Action, Science Policy, Environmental Governance, Finance and Economic Transformations, and Digital Transformations are the seven interconnected action subprogrammes used by UNEP.

UNNC creates and provides news and information about the UN to media outlets all around the world. It offers organizational assistance to journalists covering the UN and keeps the UN News Centre on the Internet updated with news in six languages continuously.

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is one of the six main committees of the United Nations General Assembly. It focuses on issues related to disarmament, global security, and measures to promote international peace and stability. DISEC operates under the framework of the United Nations Charter, which mandates the General Assembly to address issues related to arms control, non-proliferation, and disarmament.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the United Nations (UN) six primary organs, and it is tasked with guaranteeing international peace and security, suggesting new UN members to the General Assembly, and recommending any modifications to the UN Charter. The Security Council is in charge of deciding whether a threat to peace or an act of aggression exists. It encourages the disputants to resolve it peacefully and suggests methods of adjustment or terms of settling. To preserve or reestablish global security and peace, the Security Council may put sanctions or even authorize the use of force in some cases

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. It was established on March 15, 2006, by the UN General Assembly to replace the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR), which was criticized for issues related to membership and political bias.

The United Nations General Assembly established the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on December 14, 1950. The agency’s mission is to lead and coordinate global action to protect refugees and solve refugee issues globally. Its primary goal is to protect the rights and well-being of refugees. It works to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another country, with the option of returning home voluntarily, integrating locally, or relocating to a third country. It is also mandated to assist stateless people.

In this committee, delegates would likely stimulate the discussions and decision-making processes that take place within the Bangladeshi government when addressing important national and international matters. They may be tasked with representing various high-level officials, ministers, or policymakers in Bangladesh’s cabinet, and their primary focus would be on issues specific to the country. The Language of this Committee will be Bangla.
